“Should we try somewhere else for breakfast today?” Edward asked as they walked out of their room the next morning.

“I suppose we could, but I’m going to be disappointed if the food isn’t as good as what we’ve been having at the diner.”

Edward nodded. “It’s difficult. Do we go with what we know will be good or try for some variety?”

“Good morning,” Sandra called from the door to the office. “How are you today?”

“We’re very well, thanks,” Edward replied as they walked closer to the woman.

“I didn’t mean to drag you over here to talk to me,” Sandra laughed. “I was just saying hello. Since you’re here, did you sleep well?”

Janet nodded. “We took a walk before bed, which wore us both out. Craterstown feels lovely and safe, even after dark.”

“It’s very safe,” Sandra assured her. “Although I don’t know that I’d go wandering through the streets after midnight myself. Craterstown isn’t immune to all of the world’s problems, and we aren’t terribly far from several larger cities that have even more to deal with.”

“I can’t imagine staying up until midnight anymore,” Janet told her. “We much prefer to be earlier risers, which means getting to bed at a reasonable hour each night.”

“Remember what I said, and do let me know if anything keeps you up at night during the rest of your stay,” Sandra said.

“Thank you,” Edward said. “We’re just off to get breakfast. Is there a restaurant that you’d recommend for that?”

Sandra shrugged. “Everyone in Craterstown goes to the diner for breakfast. I don’t think any of the other restaurants in town even serve breakfast. The place across from the museum did for a while, but I’m pretty sure they’ve stopped now because no one ever went.”

“That makes our decision easier,” Edward said with a laugh.

Five minutes later, they were sitting at the counter in the diner yet again.

“What can I get you?” the woman behind the counter asked.

Janet stared at her for a moment. “Sorry, I was expecting Iris,” she blurted out.

“Iris has Friday mornings off,” was the reply. “I take it you’ve been eating here a lot?”

“Just about every meal since we arrived in Craterstown,” Janet told her.

“Well, I’m Alice, and I work Friday mornings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons.”

“It’s very nice to meet you,” Janet replied.

“Are you ready to order?” Alice asked.

Janet flushed and then looked back down at her menu. The pair ordered and then sat back and sipped coffee while they waited for their food.

“What shall we do today?” Edward asked as Alice set plates full of food in front of each of them.

“I don’t know. There must be interesting places to go and things to see nearby,” Janet replied.

“You could go to Vista Lake,” Alice suggested.

“Where is Vista Lake, and what is there to do there?” Edward asked.

Alice grinned. “It’s just up the road, about forty minutes away. There is a lake, but it’s only a small one. Whenever anyone here talks about going to Vista Lake, they’re talking about going to the amusement park at the lake.
